CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- The first stage of the SpaceX COTS-2 Falcon 9 rocket is being moved into a SpaceX hangar at Pad 40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. Once assembled, it will be a two-stage fully integrated launch vehicle, consisting of a first stage powered by nine SpaceX-developed Merlin 1C engines, a second stage, an interstage, an unpressurized trunk and the Dragon spacecraft qualification unit. SpaceX was awarded procurement for three demonstration flights under the Commercial Orbital Transportation Services, or COTS, program managed by NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston. A subsequent contract for Commercial Resupply Services, or CRS, was awarded in late 2008 to resupply the International Space Station. Artist's concept of Mars outpost designed to protect astronauts from radiation. The shelter is made up from radiation-shielding materials that may be producted from the elements available locally on Mars.

"One possible solution is "Mars bricks." Astronauts could produce radiation-resistant bricks from materials available locally on Mars, and use them to build shelters. They might, for example, combine the sand-like "regolith" that covers the Martian surface with a polymer made on-site from carbon dioxide and water, both abundant on the red planet. Zapping this mixture with microwaves creates plastic-looking bricks that double as good radiation shielding" (Sheila Thibeault, a scientist at NASA's Langley Research Center)

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- During Crew Equipment Interface Test (CEIT) activities at SPACEHAB, members of the STS-106 crew check out a Russian foot restraint, equipment that will be part of the payload on their mission to the International Space Station. Around the table are Mission Specialist Yuri I. Malenchenko (back to camera), a SPACEHAB worker, and Mission Specialists Daniel C. Burbank (at end of table) and Edward T. Lu (right). Others at KSC for the CEIT are Commander Terrence W. Wilcutt, Pilot Scott D. Altman, and Mission Specialists Boris V. Morukov and Richard A. Mastracchio. Malenchenko and Morukov represent the Russian Aviation and Space Agency. On the 11-day mission, the seven-member crew will perform support tasks on orbit, transfer supplies and prepare the living quarters in the newly arrived Zvezda Service Module for the first long-duration crew, dubbed “Expedition One,” which is due to arrive at the Station in late fall.
