Auto conversion to airplane engines. With normal operations of this automobile factory suspended for the duration, the gigantic task of converting the entire plant (floor space: 500' x 900') to war production was taken over by the National Defense Plant Corporation. This involved all degrees of remodelling, the removal of old and installation of new machinery, and extensive rebuilding of the plant itself. This hand milling machine, formerly used in manufacture of automobile motors, has been converted to production of airplane engines. In peacetime it was used to mill the pulley keyway on the front of crankshafts. It cost $150 to convert this $1,800 machine with installation of a special fixture to enable milling of staking nicks at each end of crankpin oil hobs. Chevrolet, Buffalo, New York

A Maker of Rainbows. The famous rainbow woollens of Poland are known all over Europe for their beauty of coloring and quality of texture. On Sundays the rural roads of Poland are bright with the gay costumes of the peasants, and they are seen even in the cities, on market days. It is on such simple machines as this that the rainbow wool is spun by the barefooted peasant women, whose industry and thrift are proverbial, and who, despite hardship and misery, never give up nor cease to believe in the rainbow of the future. It is because the war has worked some of its worst havoc in the large agricultural areas of Poland that the country is now undergoing such a strain of want and distress. The coming of the American Red Cross into these ruined country districts has been the only source of relief the people have known

Stereographen sind Geräte, die in der Lage sind, ein dreidimensionales Bild aus zwei Fotografien zu erstellen, die etwa 2,5 Zoll Unterschied zwischen ihnen haben, so dass es das reale Gesichtsfeld der beiden Augen imitieren könnte. Kombiniert man diese Bilder mit Hilfe eines Stereoskops zu einem einzigen Bild, kann man die Illusion der Tiefe des Bildes erleben. Stereoskope arbeiten nach dem gleichen Prinzip wie das menschliche binokulare Sehen. Unsere Augen sind durch etwa zwei Zentimeter voneinander getrennt, so dass wir alles aus zwei verschiedenen Winkeln sehen. Wenn das Gehirn diese Ansichten in einem einzigen Bild kombiniert, erhalten wir die räumliche Tiefe und Dimension. Stereographien waren zwischen 1850 und 1930 auf der ganzen Welt äußerst beliebt. Während dieser Zeit wurden Millionen von Stereografien gemacht. Es gab ein breites Themenspektrum: Landschaft, Reisen, historische Momente, Naturkatastrophen, Architektur und viele andere.
