n the other sideto the second support. The object of the condenser is to de-magnetize as quickly as possible the soft iron core, as the lengthof the spark depends upon the suddenness with which this isaccomplished. On breaking contact a current is induced in theprimary wire in the same direction as the primary current, whichwould tend to prolong the magnetization of the iron core if itwere not directed into the condenser. The condenser imme-diately discharges, and produces a reverse current in the primarywire, resulting in the instant demagnetization of the core. The Eochefort and Wydt induction coil was shown in thesummer of 1898 before the Eontgen Society of London. Thechief points are the small size of the secondary wire and theinsulation, which is dependent on a special solid hydrocarbon. ELECTRICAL APPARA TUS AND METHODS 37 It is claimed to possess certain advantages over the old form ofinduction coil, such as heavy sparking and economy in the amountof initial energy required. so

The Tesla Coil This is a high - frequency coil with an alternating current, which yields good results with the focus tube. It can be chargedfrom an alternating house-supply, and the current is first passedthrough a transformer with oil insulation. As the secondarycurrent is alternating, a special kind of tube is required. Thisapparatus is less convenient and cleanly than the ordinary induc-tion coil. c The Tesla Oscillator first shown by Professor Silvanus Thompson at the inauguralmeeting of the Eontgen Society of London. It is a converter ofelectrical energy, which produces a number of extremely rapidoscillatory discharges. From a practical point of view, it is opento the serious objection that the resulting secondary current isalternating. 38 THE EONTGEN RA YS IN MEDICAL WORK III. THE VACUUM TUBE Soon after the invention of the induction coil, it wa
