The X-rays should form as near a right angle to the plate as possible,always avoiding the shadow of the occipital bone. If the rays are directed through the cervical region,the shadows of the vertebrse will throw irregular shadows over the sinuses. I find that this is un-satisfactory. rays through the neck,—we can place a small fluorescent screen onone side and remove the Crookes tube to a suitable distance. By thismeans I have been able to demonstrate the presence of foreign bodies,and need hardly add that they are more easily photographed. Laryngology. While the X-rays have accomplished but little in the department oflaryngology, they have proved of great service in the detection andaccurate localization of foreign bodies in the upper portion of the diges-tive and respiratory tracts, thus aiding the laryngologist to decide as tothe advisability and character of operations for their removal; also inthe determination of the ossification of structures in the laryngeal andtracheal cartilages. At present we can ascertain with scientific accuracythe time and the points at which all the cartilages ossify. The X-raysaid in the diagnosis of intra-thoracic growths involving the respiratorytract, either by compression of the trachea, or by some form of vocal-cordparalysis.
