d tests should be made. Thisis a not infrequent cause of malnutrition, andthese tests are the best helps we have in arrang-ing a diet on which the child will gain. Im-paired ability to digest and assimilate foodunder this condition calls for longer rest pe-riods and special guarding against over-fatigue. Defects at Various Ages.—In a recent studyof 602 children, ranging ;in age from 2 to 15years, we found an average of six defects perchild. No evidence was shown of any particularperiod in which there is a greater tendency todefect, as there was remarkable uniformity inthe number of defects at all the ages included. The significance of various defects may vary,however, with the age of the child. Because ofthe small size of the naso-pharynx, for example,an excess of adenoid tissue may be a seriousdanger during infancy and the pre-school age,while tonsils do not as a rule become infectedbefore the age of five or six.
