ur-gery. In 1879 the regents permitted the homoeopathic faculty to appoint aprofessor of the diseases of children, and obstetrics and gynecology, whoshould serve without compensation. Two years later, in 1881, this subjectwas provided for on a nev. footing, a chair was created with the title ofobstetrics and diseases of women and children, the legislature making anappropriation for its support. Instruction in ophthalmology and otology wasgiven from 1881 to 1885 by the professor of theory and practice, without extracompensation, and in the latter year an associate professor of those subjectsAvas appointed: and in 1886, the position was created of a professorship ofophthalmology and otology. Beginning with the college year 1905-6, there isto be an additional member of the faculty with the title of director of thehomoeopathic pathogenetic and hospital laboratories. The duties of this officerwill be to investigate subjects appertaining to materia medica and the testingof drugs, also to supervise the pathological work connected with the hospitalclinics. Dr. Jones was succeeded as dean by Dr. Edward C. Franklin, who wasthe first professor of surgery appointed in the college. Dr. Franklin was bornin Flushmg, New York, in 1822, and received his medical education in XewYork city, where he was a private pupil of Dr. Valentine Mott. Soon afterentering practice he moved to California and there, for a time, had charge ofthe Marine Hospital of San Francisco.
