The protrusion is usually small, being about one or twoinches (2.54 or 5.08 centimeters) in length, highly colored, andreturns either spontaneously or by the aid of slight pressure.Unless the exciting cause is removed, repeated protrusions, 25 386 DISEASES OF THE RECTUM AND ANUS becoming more extensive as the child grows older, are to beexpected. Prolapse of All the Rectal Coats (Complete Procidentia) Protrusion of all the rectal coats (Figs. 124, 125, and 126),alone or in conjunction, occurs less frequently than the pre-ceding variety, and may be the result of an antecedent partialprolapse which has existed for a number of years. It is seenmost frequently in persons past middle life and in those suffer-ing from paralysis, fecal impaction, vesic calculi, urethral strict-ure, enlarged prostate, hemorrhoids, or polyps. The protruded mass is much larger than in the varietypreviously described, measuring from three to six inches (7.62to 15.24 centimeters) or more in length (see Dr. Ladinskiscase, Plate XX and Fig. 126) and from two to three inches(5.08 to 7.62 centimeters) across the base.
