I DIGESTION. 89 179. A quiet and tranquil state of mind is also essentialto good digestion. 180. Drinks taken in large quantities materially inter-fere with, the process of digestion. The juices secreted bythe stomach itself are sufficient for the solution of mostarticles of diet; and whenever a superabundance of liquidis swallowed, the first effort of the stomach is to get ridof it. This it does by absorbing the liquid at once andwithout change through the blood-vessels of the mucouscoat. The digestion of the more solid materials is notcommenced until the liquid is disposed of. 181. As soon as any portions of the food become suffi-ciently digested to mix with the gastric fluid, and formchyme, they are sent through the pyloric orifice of thestomach into the duodenum, or first portion of the aliment-ary canal.
