They nave made necessary theexcavation of about 30,000,000 cubic yards more than weis includedin the first estimates for Culebra Cut, but they have not in the pastand will not in the future endanger the ultimate success of the canal.Because of their importance as a factor in canal construction theyare discussed in considerable detail. The following information, with accompanying illustrations, haslargely been given by the author m a paper ^ read before the TwelfthInternational Congi*ess at Toronto, Canada. Any excavation in the earths crust sets up stresses in the con-tiguous rocks, because of the unbalanced pressures created by thesubstitution of atmospheric pressure for the greater pressure of thematerial excavated.
