It is perhaps impossible to overestimatethe value and importance of the x-ray inthe diagnosis of the surgical diseases ofthe kidney, or3 1 should rather say, thedifferential diagnosis of these diseases,for the x-ray introduces a factor of cer-tainty in place of uncertainty; a factor ofexactness in place of inexactness; a factorof solidity and satisfaction in place ofguess-work and doubt, and only thoseof us who practiced renal surgery beforethe x-ray was discovered can appreciatethis.
