Vera Cruz. The first shot fired at the invading American forces had scarcely died out when the Mexican Red Cross Nurses realizing that there would be work for them, appeared on the scene of action. The photograph shows the interior of a Mexican home which had been struck by one of the 5' shells thrown by the U.S. Cruiser Chester in the assault on Vera Cruz. A Red Cross Nurse is shown aiding the occupant of the house. She had fainted when the shell pierced her home and wrought the ruin of her abode
