Hamilton W. Wright, center, chief of the Industrial Salvage Branch, Salvage Division, War Production Board, is presented with a handsomely prepared jumbo book by Gordon Lament, right, of New York City, president of the Dairy Industry Supply Association. The book contains copies of the 250 pages of advertising and editorial cooperation contributed by the twenty-two trade publications in the dairy field in connection with special scrap salvage campaign sponsored by the Dairy Industry Supply Association, which covered 30,000 dairy processing firms throughout the country. It is worthy to note that twenty million pounds of critically needed materials were collected against an original objective of a million pounds. Truly a remarkable performance. Shown here are the four simple steps in the use of the new lid and metal band closure which will replace the more familiar zinc mason cap--conserving zinc so vitally needed for direct war materials. The Containers Division of the War Production Board (WPB) is encouraging manufacturers to make many millions of these closures available for this year's canning. Jar at the left, having been sterilized, is ready to be filled. Second jar shows the position of the lid immediately after filling, the rubber gasket is placed in between the lid and the mouth of the jar. Third jar: the metal band is screwed on tightly and then slightly loosened and processing begins. After processing is completed, band is tightened again. Jar at the right shows how the band can be removed when the food has thoroughly cooled and the vacuum will hold the lid tightly in place. A truly all-glass package. To open, insert a knife to break vacuum, and lid lifts off easily

Substitute materials. A shipment of 1,488 feet of 18-inch, 24-inch, 30-inch and 36-inch wooden pipe on one flat car. Weight 70,020 pounds. An equal footage of reinforced concrete pipe weighs 455,412 pounds, requires over ten cars. These pipes, used in place of corrugated iron or reinforced concrete pipes, are made of sections cut from short lengths of wood. Locking of adjacent rings with hardwood dowel pins produces a flexible structure. About 100,000 feet of these wooden pipes were installed in 1942 in drainage culverts, storm sewers and conduits, under highways and at army camps, naval stations, airfields and ordnance plants
