Chicago Police Commissioner defends men. Washington, D.C., June 30. Not-with-standing a coroner's report that seven of the fatalities resulted from bullet wounds in the back, James P. Allman, Chicago police commissioner, told the Senate Civil Liberties Committee today that his police officers were justified in the tactics which resulted in the death of 10 marching steel strikers in front of the South Chicago plant of the Republic Steel Corp., last May 30. His men were attacked while attempting to preserve the peace, Allman insisted, and only by the tactics used was a massacre prevented if the marching strikers had succeeded in entering the plant where men were at work, 6/30/37

Baseball bats used by police in strike duty in Michigan town. Washington, D.C., Aug. 1. Testifying before the Senate Civil Liberties Committee today, Mayor Daniel A. Knaggs of Monroe, Mich., admitted that some of the special police officers sworn in for strike duty at the Newton steel plant were armed with baseball bats because there were not enough bilies to go around. When he requested troops of Governor Frank Murphy to open up the picket line, Knaggs declared he was told to deputize his own men. This, he did, and over 30 persons were sworn in as special officers between June 9 and June 22, 1937, 8/1/38

Shot by own police declares Republic Steel Corp. official. Washington, D.C., Aug. 9. Carl. W. Meyers, district manager for Republic Steel Corp. at Canton Ohio, today told the Senate Civil Liberties Committee that he was shot by one of his own police officers during the steel strike in 1937. He said a company officer guarding his home asked him a question as he approached, and that he replied "this is MR. Meyers". The man however, he added, did not understand him and at 75 feet shot him. Meyers named the man as "Edwin Bank," 8/9/38
