Representatives of the Washington branch of the American League for Peace and Democracy took up signs today and picketed the Italian Embassy. Production. B-17F heavy bombers. The upper power turret of a new B-17F heavy bomber, just produced at the Long Beach, California, plant of Douglas Aircraft. Turrets like this have meant the finish of many Jap and Nazi flyers. Better known as the "Flying Fortress," the B-17F is a later model B-17, which distinguished itself in action in the South Pacific, over Germany and elsewhere. German warning to occupied France. Here, in the Nazis' own black and white, is visual testimony to the fact that the battle of France continues. This grim poster came to the Office of War Information (OWI) from Paris by a devious route, a route which for obvious reasons cannot be given but which, by its very existence, proves that the Gestapo isn't all-powerful. Bordered in red, surmounted by eagle and swastika, the poster is a notice that a member of the German army was killed in Paris, August 21, 1941, and that, as a consequence, every Frenchman under arrest, from August 23 on, will be considered a hostage. "In the case of another attack," the notice--in French and German--states, "hostages in a number corresponding to the seriousness of the criminal act committed will be shot." Sergeant Frank Hoffman is on a busman's holiday from his job as cook at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, buying sausage to cook for his girl friend before he goes back to camp. Sergeant Hoffman is shopping in Anthony Weber's store in the German section of New York. Both Hoffman and Weber are glad to be in the liberty-loving United States instead of Germany, and each is doing his part to protect our democratic system of government from the Nazi forces which threaten to destroy it. Hoffman, of course, is in the Army; Weber is cooperating with other patriotic American storekeepers in the battle against inflation by displaying a price ceiling sign in German
