This seven year old boy has been through some of the serverest hardships of war. He was behind the German lines for four years, living on raw beets for months. He was allowed a small piece of bread each day which he voluntarily gave to his mother, who was ill and who subsequently died through maltreatment. The child came all the way from the invaded territory to central France without a relative, arriving at Chateauroux in a terrible condition from malnutrition and neglect. The American Red Cross fed and cared for him, and he is now a normal child and has been adopted by a Y.M.C.A. man. The picture shows him talking to Mrs. Fisher American Red Cross refugee delegate at Chateauroux, to whom credit is due for saving this child. Oct. 1918
