Interferometer tests standard gages for automobile manufacturers. Washington, D.C. May 28. I.J. Fullmer of the Bureau of Standards is shown with an interferometer by means of which differences in length are measured in terms of wave-lengths of light to the millionth of an inch. A four-inch square precision gage is being compared for length with the Bureau's standard 4 inch, which is rectangular in shape. These gages are tested against the master gages which the different auto manufacturers check their measuring devices so that the parts of the cars separately made can be, when assembled, fitted perfectly. Ordinary seaman Jackson becomes a D.E.M.S seaman gunner. After a four months' course at a naval training establishment, ordinary seaman Jackson became a seaman gunner on board a merchant ship, a member of the Navy's Defensively Equipped Merchant Ships Service. D.E.M.S gunners and gunners of the Maritime Regiments, soldiers who now serve beside them, have destroyed or damaged 228 enemy aircraft since the beginning of the war. Equipped with a great variety of new weapons and anti-aircraft devices, the D.E.M.S Service has grown from a nucleus of 1,300 men to nearly 20,000 trained seamen gunners and gunslayers. Soldiers originally recruited from the Army as a temporary augmentation, later took the name Maritime Regiments, thus reviving and carrying on the 17th century regiment of that name. The KSC Beach Corrosion Test Site was established in the 1960s and has provided more than 30 years of historical information on the long-term performance of many materials in use at KSC and other locations around the world. S48-E-013 (15 Sept 1991) ---  The Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) in the payload bay of the earth- orbiting Discovery.  UARS is scheduled for deploy on flight day three of the STS-48 mission.  Data from UARS will enable scientists to study ozone depletion in the stratosphere, or upper atmosphere.  This image was transmitted by the Electronic Still Camera (ESC), Development Test Objective (DTO) 648.  The ESC is making its initial appearance on a Space Shuttle flight.   Electronic still photography is a new technology that enables a camera to electronically capture and digitize an image with resolution approaching film quality.  The digital image is stored on removable hard disks or small optical disks, and can be converted to a format suitable for downlink transmission or enhanced using image processing software. The Electronic Still Camera (ESC) was developed by the Man- Systems Division at the Johnson Space Center and is the first model in a planned evolutionary development leading to a family of high-resolution digital imaging devices.
