Brass industrialist tells Monopoly Committee they 'follow the leader and pray for profit.' Washington, D.C., May 9. H.L.Randall, President of the Riverside Metal Co., left, and John Coe, Jr., Vice President of the American Brass Co., on the right, witnesses before the Monopoly Committee's hearings on the beryllium industry today. Senator Joseph O'Mahoney, Co-chairman of the Committee, asking about the relation of price and production costs, received from Randell in reply, 'We follow the price set by the leader and pray that we will make a profit.' Coe denied that his firm set prices for others to follow. O'Mahoney mentioned that certain beryllium allow products had increased in price when raw materials were cheap, and Coe countered that his firm had lost from $10,000 to $20,000 annually over a period of years while they were developing beryllium processes

V explains 'Brandeis System' of insurance to Monopoly Committee. Washington, D.C., June 15. Judd Dewey, Deputy Commissioner of Savings Bank Life Insurance in Massachusetts, today reviewed the achievements of the life insurance system inaugurated by the late former Supreme Court Associate Justice Brandeis in his state. He showed that the 'Brandeis System,' while paying higher annual dividends, charges lower premiums, costs a great deal less to operate, made a higher rate in earnings on investments, and maintained a higher ratio of surplus to reserves than the other companies. Only one company in the state paid higher dividends over the last ten years, he said, and that company paid only 89 cents more for the entire period

Government cartographer develops new process for making relief maps. Washington, D.C., Jan. 13. Through a process just perfected by John Braund, Cartographer for the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, relief maps can now be made showing all the details of topography in a form true to nature and which can be quickly understood and accurately read by even the untrained map reader. Instead of compressed paper or cardboard, Braund uses thin metal on which he has printed the map desired. He then hammers out the typography with a special electric hammer he has designed. Braund says this new method has proved more speedier, efficient, and costs less to make than maps, 1/13/39

Citations of Individual Production Merit awarded. The first five citations of Individual Production Merit have been awarded to five war workers, War Production Drive Headquarters has announced. The citation is the highest award conferred for individual achievement. It is granted only for ideas or suggestions that have an outstanding effect on the war effort. Walter P. Hill of Detroit, Michigan, a sales and development manager for the Wolverine Tube Division of the Calumet and Hecla Consolidated Copper Co., developed an idea of prime military importance. All that can be said is that he developed the "overall spum and primer for an ammunition primer which is now being utilized for large manufacturers of primer tubes. This effects a saving of metal, increased production with present facilities and lower overall production costs." The rest has been restricted by military authorities

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- For the fourth time in Space Shuttle Program history, 350,000 gallons of water are released on a Mobile Launcher Platform (MLP) at Launch Pad 39A during a water sound suppression test. Because of the unusual event, media and workers watch from nearby vantage points on the Fixed Service Structure (left). This test is being conducted following the replacement of the six main system valves, which had been in place since the beginning of the Shuttle Program and had reached the end of their service life. Also, the hydraulic portion of the valve actuators has been redesigned and simplified to reduce maintenance costs. The sound suppression water system is installed on the launch pads to protect the orbiter and its payloads from damage by acoustical energy reflected from the MLP during launch. The system includes an elevated water tank with a capacity of 300,000 gallons. The tank is 290 feet high and stands on the northeast side of the Pad. The water is released for launch just before the ignition of the orbiter's three main engines and twin solid rocket boosters, and flows through parallel 7-foot-diameter pipes to the Pad area. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- In the hypergolic maintenance facility at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, a technician monitors equipment during testing of the Ares I-X Roll Control System, or RoCS. The RoCS Servicing Simulation Test is to gather data that will be used to help certify the ground support equipment design and validate the servicing requirements and processes. The RoCS is part of the Interstage structure, the lowest axial segment of the Upper Stage Simulator. In an effort to reduce costs and meet the schedule, most of the ground support equipment that will be used for the RoCS servicing is of space shuttle heritage. This high-fidelity servicing simulation will provide confidence that servicing requirements can be met with the heritage system. At the same time, the test will gather process data that will be used to modify or refine the equipment and processes to be used for the actual flight element. Former President Ronald Reagan and his wife, Nancy, disembark a Boeing 747 commercial aircraft upon their arrival in Tokyo. Spouses, dependents and parents of 225 military personnel stationed in Japan joined the former first family on the trip. Dubbed the Reagan Friendship Flight, the effort was organized in conjunction with the United Services Organization and the Air Force and gave families of military personnel an opportunity to visit their loved ones at greatly reduced costs. Family members were only required to pay traveling expenses to Los Angeles, their departure point

But the benefits of being a military parent are complicated by deployment schedules and paychecks that don't seem to increase at the same rate as the costs a newborn brings. This image illustrates the initial dilemmas faced by military parents. Our model is two-week-old William Wallace, a military dependent

The wedge-shaped X-33 was a sub-scale technology demonstration prototype of a Reusable Launch Vehicle (RLV). Through demonstration flights and ground research, NASA's X-33 program was to provide the information needed for industry representatives such as Lockheed Martin (builder of the X-33 Venture Star) to decide by the year 2000 whether to proceed with the development of a full-scale, commercial RLV program. This program would dramatically increase reliability and lower the costs of putting a payload into space. This would in turn create new opportunities for space access and significantly improve U.S. economic competitiveness in the worldwide launch marketplace. NASA would be a customer, not the operator in the commercial RLV. The X-33 program was cancelled in 2001. X-33

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- From vantage points on the Fixed Service Structure (left) on Launch Pad 39A, workers and the media look down upon the Mobile Launcher Platform (MLP) waiting for the start of a water sound suppression test. The water is released just before the ignition of the orbiter's three main engines and twin solid rocket boosters, and flows through parallel 7-foot-diameter pipes to the Pad area. KSC-04pd1071
