Crew members are at KSC for equipment familiarization.  STS-114 is classified as Logistics Flight 1 to the International Space Station, delivering new supplies and replacing one of the orbital outpost’s Control Moment Gyroscopes (CMGs). STS-114 will also carry a Raffaello Multi-Purpose Logistics Module and the External Stowage Platform-2.  The crew is slated to conduct at least three spacewalks: They will demonstrate repair techniques of the Shuttle’s Thermal Protection System,  replace the failed CMG with one delivered by the Shuttle, and  install the External Stowage Platform.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -  STS-114 Mission Specialist Charles Camarda is helped by the Closeout Crew with his launch and entry suit before entering Space Shuttle Discovery.  This is Camarda’s first Shuttle flight.  The Return to Flight mission to the International Space Station carries the External Stowage Platform-2, equipped with spare part assemblies, and a replacement Control Moment Gyroscope contained in the Lightweight Multi-Purpose Experiment Support Structure and Multi-Purpose Logistics Module Raffaello, housing 15 tons of hardware and supplies that will be transferred to the Station after the Shuttle docks to the complex .  On this mission, the crew will perform inspections on-orbit for the first time of all of the Reinforced Carbon-Carbon (RCC) panels on the leading edge of the wings and the Thermal Protection System tiles using the new Canadian-built Orbiter Boom Sensor System and the data from 176 impact and temperature sensors. Mission Specialists will also practice repair techniques on RCC and tile samples during a spacewalk in the payload bay. KSC-05pp1794

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -  In the Space Station Processing Facility, STS-114 Mission Specialists Andrew Thomas (center) and Soichi Noguchi (right) work with equipment while Mission Specialist Charles Camarda (left) watches.  Noguchi is with the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).  They and other crew members are at KSC for equipment familiarization.  STS-114 is classified as Logistics Flight 1 to the International Space Station, delivering new supplies and replacing one of the orbital outpost’s Control Moment Gyroscopes (CMGs). STS-114 will also carry a Raffaello Multi-Purpose Logistics Module and the External Stowage Platform-2.  The crew is slated to conduct at least three spacewalks: They will demonstrate repair techniques of the Shuttle’s Thermal Protection System,  replace the failed CMG with one delivered by the Shuttle, and  install the External Stowage Platform.
