A team of archaeologists from the Suffolk County Council Archaeology Department is excavating the site of the old hospital annex on base. The excavation site forms part of an early Anglo-Saxon cemetery complex first identified in 1956 and continues on from work carried out on different parts of the site. The present excavation has so far revealed graves dating from a period between the late fifth and early seventh centuries, which brings the total of burials found in this area to more than 400
