Seven year old boy in front, Byron Hamilton, has a badly cut finger, but helps his brother regularly. Behind him is his brother, George, 11 years. He cut his finger half off while working. They and many other youngsters said they were always cutting their fingers. (See photo #2435 and label.) George earns $1.00 some days, $.75 usually. Some of the others said they earn $1.00 when they work all day. At times they start at 7 a.m., work all day and until midnight, but the work is very irregular. Names of those in photo are George Mathews, Johnny Rust, John Surles[?], Fulsom McCutchin (11 yrs.), Albert Robinson, Morris McConnell. Location: Eastport, Maine.

The "Kinleygarten" (the mill policeme[n] called it) at Lynchburg (Virginia) Cotton Mill[s.] The children of the mill settlement, from six to eight years attend. Several olde[r] boys were hanging around and joining in when they could. Also a mother and babe. I asked Miss Carrington, in charge, where the children from eight to fourteen go, and she said that few of them at those ages care for education. They are just waiting to become old enough to get into the mill. The only available school for them is a long way off. Location: Lynchburg, Virginia.

Shrimp-pickers in Peerless Oyster Co. Photo taken just as they stood. On other side of the shed, still younger children were working. Out of sixty working (only half were there) I counted fifteen apparently under twelve years old. Some three, four, and five years old were picking too. Parents acknowledged ages and fact that they worked some. Boss said they went to work at 3:00 A.M., and would quit about 3 or 4 P.M. Location: Bay St. Louis, Mississippi.

Supt. and overseers with the "Relief Crowd," in Yazoo City (Miss.) Yarn Mills. The Supt. said, "We relieve all children under sixteen for two hours a day except the doffers, who get plenty of time off. They go out and play." Then turning to the children he said, "Now play." They eyed him blankly, "Play wot?" "Oh, play anything." Before they could do it, however, he had to pose them himself (see photo 2106) which was especially posed for the occasion. In this photo, note the disparity between the (alleged) ages of the younger ones who said that they were twelve and thirteen, and the older ones, who said fifteen years old. Location: Yazoo City, Mississippi.

Part of the family of R.D. Thomas. He and a boy of 15 are working in the Century Cotton Mill, South Boston, Virginia The girl on the ground does not work now, but said she was 12 years old (which she would not likely have done if she were in the mill). These children who are not working make a good means of comparison for ages of those that are working. Family has lived here four years. Before that, they lived in a Virginia farm.
