Siphons are used to draw off the liquid from avessel containing it, especially where there is sedi-ment at the bottom and we desire to take off theclear liquid without disturbing the sediment; orthe reverse may be done, and we may remove thesediment with little of the liquid. Thus the siphonmay be employed to remove the objectionable refuse or debris from an aquarium, or for manyother useful purposes. I recently had occasion to connect together aseries of aquaria, each with a glass bottom. Itwas impossible for me to bore holes in the glass,so I was necessarily forced to use the siphon ; but adifficulty arose.
