Port Royal, Cap-tain Morris, dropped down the river about 1,000 yards on account of the sharp-shooters, besides being very much exposed to a plunging fire from the fort, endanger-ing the steam boilers. This left the Galena alone in front of the fort. About 11 oclock Port Darlingwas re-enforced by the Merrimacs crew, which had been sent down from Richmond. They sprang upon the parapets and gave three cheers. After this shell came one which exploded onour deck, killing and wounding several men. Among these was a powder boy in theact of passing a cartridge, which exploded. While this dreadful work was going on forward the after division fared stillworse. A 10-inch solid shot, followed immediately by two other 8-incli solid shot, struck this part of the ship, killing and wounding the entire after division of twenty-five men and dis
