arinenfor the utmost flexibility, the Holmdellaboratory deals with customers tele-phone equipment, transmissionequipment, data communications,and communications science studies. The Indian Hill Laboratory, nearChicago and Western Electrics Haw-thorne Works, is devoted to develop-ment of the electronic switching sys-tems that ultimately will replace theelectromechanical systems now in thenations communications network. Meanwhile, Western Electric is ex-panding its production facilities in theSouthwest. The new Phoenix, Arizonaplant, which will manufacture wireand cable products for Bell com-panies, will become WEs 15th majormanufacturing facility when it openslate this year. Initially, the Phoenix plant will pro-duce up to 42 billion conductor feetof cable a year, and will ultimatelyhave an annual capacity of approxi-mately 70 BCF. When fully opera-tional, the plant will employ nearly1,000 persons, most of whom will berecruited locally. Training of newmachinists is already in progress.

J.Presti, of Bell Telephone Laboratories.The new spectrograph can makespectrograms directly from standardmylar magnetic recording tape in 80seconds.
