Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis (1875–1911) was a Lithuanian painter, composer and writer. He is considered one of the most important artists of the early 20th century in Lithuania and is known for his unique style, which combines symbolism, Art Nouveau and folk art. Born in Varėna, Lithuania, Ciurlionis showed an early talent for music and painting. He studied at the Warsaw Conservatory and later at the Leipzig Conservatory, where he was exposed to the works of Wagner and other German composers. In addition to his musical studies, Ciurlionis also pursued painting and drawing. He developed a distinctive style that combined elements of Lithuanian folk art with Art Nouveau and Symbolism. His paintings often featured landscapes and mystical themes, and he was particularly interested in the relationship between nature and spirituality. Ciurlionis also wrote poetry and prose, and his work reflected his interest in mysticism and spirituality. He believed that art had the power to transcend everyday reality and connect people to higher realms of consciousness. Despite his short life (he died of pneumonia at the age of 35), Ciurlionis left a lasting legacy in Lithuania and beyond. His music and art continue to inspire artists and audiences today, and he is celebrated as a national hero in Lithuania.
