THE PATACHE. 25 south and east fagades, constructed under Louis XII.,are Gothic; the north presents a specimen of the moremodern taste of the age of Francis I.; and the west, per-haps the most beautiful, was built by Gaston dOrleans,towards the middle of the seventeenth century, after thedesigns of the famous architect Mansard. As a whole,the chateau, of which an accurate idea is conveyed bythe annexed view, strikes the spectator by its solidityand magnificence — all the more remarkable for themeanness of the houses surrounding it. This castle plays a famous part in the wars of thatultra Catholic Association known in French history bythe name of the League. It was here that the Duede Guise was assassinated, the grand agitator of theday; and it was here that the states were assembledwhich raised the cross against the sceptre. The legalmurder of Mary Stuart by her relation Elizabeth — thatadmirable queen and hateful woman — had probablypaved the way for the destruction of Balafre,
