16th century marks an appearance of first copybooks printed from engraved metal plates. Various forms of the secretary hand get reproduced in printing. Publishers also take advantage of the metal engraving process by presenting free-form letters drawn in thin outlines, something beyond the capabilities of the woodcut.

Lace is a delicate fabric made of yarn or thread in an open weblike pattern, made by machine or by hand. Generally, lace is divided into two main categories, needlelace and bobbin lace,  although there are other types of lace, such as knitted or crocheted lace. Other laces such as these are considered as a category of their specific craft. Knitted lace, therefore, is an example of knitting. This collection considers both needle lace and bobbin lace.
