Pearl Harbor, Hawaii (Dec. 05, 2005) Veterans of the World War II-era Wickes-class destroyer USS Ward (DD 139) are greeted aboard the guided missile frigate USS Crommelin (FFG 37) by the ships commanding officer, Cmdr. Mark Manfredi prior to a tour. On December 7, 1941, Ward and her crew delivered the first shot of the war in the Pacific when she intercepted and sank a Japanese miniature submarine at the entrance to Pearl Harbor one hour before the Japanese air attack on the island of Oahu.
