Mark Manfredi prior to a tour. On December 7, 1941, Ward and her crew delivered the first shot of the war in the Pacific when she intercepted and sank a Japanese miniature submarine at the entrance to Pearl Harbor one hour before the Japanese air attack on the island of Oahu.
