At sea aboard USS Carl Vinson An Aviation Ordnanceman assigned to the "Fighting Redcocks" of Strike Fighter Squadron Two Two (VFA-22) attaches a fin to a laser guided bomb on an F/A-18 "Hornet" in preparation for afternoon flight operations. The USS Carl Vinson and its carrier airwing are conducting flight operations against terrorist training camps and military installations of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. The carefully targeted actions are designed to disrupt the use of Afghanistan as a base for terrorist operations and to attack the military capability of the Taliban regime. In the United States Navy, these consist of ships commissioned with hull classification symbols CV (aircraft carrier), CVA (attack aircraft carrier), CVB (large aircraft carrier), CVL (light aircraft carrier), CVN (aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion) and CVAN (attack aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion). The first aircraft carrier commissioned into the United States Navy was USS Langley (CV-1) on 20 March 1922.
