At sea aboard USS Kitty Hawk The Military Sealift Command Oiler USNS Yukon (T-AO 202) cruises alongside USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63), preparing for replenishment-at-sea (RAS) evolutions. A RAS is the on and off-loading of fuel and stores while ships are underway. Kitty Hawk is currently undergoing sea trials after recently completing an extensive five-month maintenance period in Yokosuka, Japan. Kitty Hawk is America's oldest active warship, and the world's only permanently forward-deployed aircraft carrier.

In the United States Navy, these consist of ships commissioned with hull classification symbols CV (aircraft carrier), CVA (attack aircraft carrier), CVB (large aircraft carrier), CVL (light aircraft carrier), CVN (aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion) and CVAN (attack aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion). The first aircraft carrier commissioned into the United States Navy was USS Langley (CV-1) on 20 March 1922.
