U.S. Army Sgt. Charles P. Espie, a public affairs operations sergeant with the 86th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Mountain), poses with Jonathan Hoffman, the director of the non-profit company Direct Aid International, June 25. Espie, a Hudson, Mass., resident and Massachusetts-licensed history teacher, talked with Hoffman, who is a Northfield, Vt., Culinary Arts teacher, about the school Hoffman is building for impoverished residents in Bamyan province. Hoffman, who is in his ninth summer here in Afghanistan building schools, is building the school in Bamyan in memory of Master Sgt. Tom Stone, a Vermont National Guardsman who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2006.
