Two and a Half Continents. The Jain religion teaches that the universe is composed of three worlds (the upper heavenly world, the middle mortal world, and the lower world of the damned) each consisting of a series of infinite continents. This painting on a hanging scroll depicts the two and a half continents which sit at the centre of the middle world. Western India, late 18th - 19th century. Chester Beatty Library InE 1669
