Training for the Future: TECOM General Visits 2d MARDIV

description

Summary

U.S. Marine Corps Major General David Furness (left), commanding general of 2d Marine Division (MARDIV), and Maj. Gen. Robert Mullen III, commanding general of Training and Education Command, sit in a brief on Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, March 4, 2020. Mullen visited 2d MARDIV to assess the implementation of new tactical training programs.
During the brief, the leaders discussed new investments made to increase the division's training capabilities such as the Advanced Small Arms Lethality Trainer and the Athletic Trainer Initiative program. The Advanced Small Arms Lethality Trainer is designed to improve a Marine's ability to scan and identify a target quickly.
“The Advanced Small Arms Lethality Trainer is going to improve marksmanship across the board and across the entire division,” said Furness. “Fighting is about putting steel on targets. The better you are at that, the quicker you can engage the enemy and put him down, and you're going to be successful.”
The Athletic Trainer Initiative program began for professional athletic trainers to treat and teach Marines how to treat and prevent injuries from happening while training.
"We're constantly on our feet, hiking and carrying heavy loads,” said Chief Warrant Officer 5 Joshua Smith, the 2d MARDIV Gunner. “If there's somebody there that can spot the injury before it becomes a long term injury, that means I keep a war fighter in the fight longer.”
