The Woman Citizen was produced by NAWSA from 1870 (when it was entitled The Woman's Journal) until 1931. The periodical transformed into The Woman Citizen in 1917 under the guidance of Carrie Chapman Catt. Through the Great War, suffragists used the outlet as a way to promote the idea of female citizenship. Unlike The Suffragist, the leading organ of the NWP, The Woman Citizen tried to explore all avenues of woman's news instead of only suffrage news. Additionally, the paper refused advertisements from any liquor or tobacco interests.
