He did, however, displaya little interest in the musketry practice,which was directed at a succession of* bottles,slung from the yard-arm, but whether hewas struck with the accuracy of aim or withthe needless destruction of valuable bottlesis doubtful. He seemed to be worthy of his position aschief, and was desirous of establishing anEuropean settlement near the mouth of theOutanata. Unfortunately, the river, al-though a noble stream, has a sandbar acrossthe mouth which effectually prevents vesselsof even light draught from passing except athigh water. The people in general werewonderfully honest, not displaying thethievish propensities which cause the visitsof many savage tribes to be so troublesome.They even brought on board articles whichhad been accidentally left on shore. Theyprobably owe much of their superiority totheir connection with the Malay Moham-medans, many of whom visit New Guinea astraders.
