Summary

The town of Serajpur on the Ganges (U.P.). 6 September 1803..
Pen-and-ink and wash drawing, by Henry Salt (1780-1827), of the town of Serajpur on the Ganges in Uttar Pradesh, dated 6th September 1803. The drawing is inscribed on the back in pencil: 'Serajpore Ganges'. Viscount Valentia (George Annesley) wrote, "In the evening we passed the town of Serajpur, pleasingly situated on the right bank of the river, with several Hindoo temples and gauts to the edge, for ablutions, some of which were in ruins, but others were building. The country is flat, excepting the high bank of the river, on which, in general, the villages are situated, surrounded by mango topes. Not unfrequently a little pagoda peeped from among the trees, and the river expanded with reaches of eight or nine miles, altogether forming a scene that was grand and pleasing, notwithstanding the even line of the horizon.""
