A massive 19 million pounds-plus (8.6 million kilograms) of Space Shuttle, support and transport hardware inch toward Launch Pad 39A from the Vehicle Assembly Building. The fully asssembled Space Shuttle Endeavour, minus its payloads, weighs about 4.5 million pounds (2 million kg.); the mobile launcher platform, on which it was assembled and from which it will lift off, weighs 9.25 million pounds (4.19 million kg.); and the crawler-transporter carrying the platform and Shuttle checks in at around 6 million pounds (2.7 million kg.). Once at the pad, the Shuttle and launch platform will be deposited atop support columns to complete preparations for the second Shuttle launch of 1995. The primary payload of mission STS-67 is the Astro-2 Astrophysics Observatory, carrying three ultraviolet telescopes that flew on the Astro-1 mission in 1990. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- The tail cone that will cover space shuttle Endeavour’s replica shuttle main engines is being transported from the Vehicle Assembly Building at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida to Orbiter Processing Facility-2. The work is part of Transition and Retirement of the remaining space shuttles, Endeavour and Atlantis. Endeavour is being prepared for public display at the California Science Center in Los Angeles. Its ferry flight to California is targeted for mid-September. Endeavour was the last space shuttle added to NASA’s orbiter fleet. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. -- With the Space Shuttle Atlantis behind them, the STS-86 crew poses for a photograph at Launch Pad 39A. The seven crew members are at KSC to participate in Terminal Countdown Demonstration Test (TCDT) activities. From left are Mission Specialists Wendy B. Lawrence, David A. Wolf, Scott E. Parazynski, Vladimir Georgievich Titov of the Russian Space Agency, Jean-Loup J.M. Chretien of the French Space Agency, CNES; Commander James D. Wetherbee; and Pilot Michael J. Bloomfield. STS-86 will be the seventh docking of the Space Shuttle with the Russian Space Station Mir. After docking, Wolf will transfer to the Mir 24 crew, replacing astronaut C.
