ewhat obsolete,are quite as, if not even more, capable of war serviceas are the contemporary ships of any foreign power.The battleships of this class comprise:— 7 Royal Sovereign,1 Hood, 1 Renown. 2 Barjleur,2 Nile. The oldest of these are the turret ships, Nile andTrafalgar, which carry an armament of four 13;^-inch and six 6-inch. The Hood is an improvedand considerably larger turret ship, with the samemain armament, but with ten 6-inch guns in thesecondary battery. The seven ships of the RoyalSovereign type are sisters to the Hood, but inthem the main armament is mounted en barbetteinstead of in turrets, with the result that theyhave a much higher freeboard both forward andaft. The Barjieur and Centurion are reducedfacsimiles of the Royal Sovereign class, but carryfour 10-inch guns in lieu of 12-inch. THE NAVY OF TO-DAY 307 The Renown is an improved Barjieur^ with thesame armament. The protected cruisers comprise nineteen ofthe first class, thirty-three of the second, and tenof the third class. All these are fast ships, withspeeds ranging from eighteen to twenty-two knots.Of the first class cruisers, two carry one 9 •2-inchand twelve 6-inch ; seven carry two 9-2-inch and ten6-inch; eight carry sixteen 6-inch and two carrytwo 9•2-inch and sixteen 6-inch. Of cruisers ofthe second class, fifteen of the earliest carry anarmament of two 6-inch and either six or eight 47-inch. All the remainder carry either ten or eleven6-inch. Of the third class, nine are sister ships,carrying eight 4-inch guns, and with a speed oftwenty knots; whilst the tenth is armed with six4*7-inch, and is a very speedy little boat, which hasdone over twenty knots.
