Hbe flnbian IDUIage 283 Douglas firs crown the rounded hilltops or grow onthe sides of ravines, and every tree leans eastwardas a result of the unceasing west winds. The Indian village is on a small plain amongwooded hills, about a mile from Morley. It is a col-lection of simple wooden houses which the Indianshave built for themselves, though some still use theprimitive teepee. In his house weretanned skins, beadwork and embroidery, as well asillustrations and cheap prints from our periodicals. In a cupboard were some iron tools and other evid-ences of civilisation. Chiniquay arrayed himself ina gorgeous costume of ermine and otter fur, and puton a magnificent head-piece of eagle feathers, withthe sharp, black horns of the mountain goat on eitherside. After the ordeal, Chiniquay charged me a dol-lar for the privilege of photographing him, notwith-standing an old friendship
