PATRIOT PUB, CO. )\L\JOR-GENERAL GEORGE ARMSTRONG CUSTER WITH GENERAL PLEASONTON The beau sahrcur of the Federal service is pictured here in his favorite velvet suit, with General Alfred Pleason-ton, who commanded the cavalry at Gettysburg. This photograph was taken at Warrenton, Va., threemonths after that battle. At the time this picture was taken, Custer was a brigadier-general in commandof the second brigade of the third division of General Pleasontons cavalry. General Custers impetuosityfinally cost him his own life and the lives of his entire command at the haiuls of the Sioux Indians June25, 1876. Custer was born in 1839 and graduated at West Point in 1861. As captain of volunteers heserved with )McClellan on the Peninsula. In June, 1863, he was made brigadier-general of volunteers andas the head of a brigade of cavalry distinguished himself at Gettysburg. Later he served with Sheridan inthe Shenandoah, won honor at Cedar Creek, and was bre\-ctted major-general of \-oluntcers o
