DESIGN FOR LA NUIT PERSANE BY DRESA. (Theatre des Arts.) By courtesy of LA rt D^coraii/. THE NEW SPIRIT IN LONDON 45 a definite contribution to the aesthetic theatre will dependlargely not only on its power to follow Manchester andGlasgow and breed its own dramatists, but to see that itbreeds the right sort of dramatist—the creators, not imitators. Without this readjustment the London RepertoryTheatre cannot possibly carry on its work on a wider scope. The real life which it imagines is the real life, and the finestmedium for dramatic expression, will sicken and drop fromits hand, and nothing will be left to it for representation. Then will come the final scene, the collecting of the piecesof this luckless movement and their sorrowful burial in theproposed National Theatre. If this readjustment takes place there will be no NationalTheatre. The chief incentive towards its establishment willbe gone. The National Theatre will no longer be necessaryas an instrument for founding the drama
