Fig. 5 represents a portion of the ring gatlier-ing about a planetoid, the larger arrow, as inFig. 4, denoting the portion of the ring whosespeed has been increased, and the smaller, thatwhich moves more slowly. The effect of such acondition was to pi-oduce a lateral pressure uponthe mass as it revolved on its axis, resulting in itselongation in the direction of its poles, exactly asa bar of hot iron rotating on its longer axis whilereceiving the blows of a hammer, is elongated.This prolateness must have continued during theaggregation of the planetoid, and afterwards, until NEBULAR HYPOTHESIS. 261 the latters own centrifugal force caused it tochange to an oblate spheroid. From this elongation, highly important resultsfollowed, viz, the inclinations of the axes of themembers of our System.
