Abraham Lincoln, the Republican candidate, was elected Presidentin 1860. He declared that it was not his intention to interfere withslavery where it legally existed. Important events were : in Polks administration — Fremonts explo-ration of the West; in Taylors and Fillmores administrations — theNicaragua Canal treaty, the discovery of gold in California, and theLopez expedition against Cuba; in Pierces administration — the Gads-den purchase; in Buchanans administration — the John Brown raid andthe beginning of secession.
