SHIMODA, Japan (Apr. 13, 2012) The grave of U.S. Sailor John D. Storm located on the grounds of the Gyokusenji Temple. The temple served as the first consulate for the United States in Japan when it was opened on Sept. 4, 1856 with Townsend Harris as first Consul General to Japan. It served as Harris's residence for two years and ten months and is home to the remains of three Sailors and two Marines from Commodore Matthew Perry's squadron who died in Japan during the 1850s.
