This illustration entitled "The First Blow", by cartoonist Clifford Berryman, which appeared in the Washington Post on August 9, 1898, shows the anti-expansionist army, which included Congressman J. W. Bailey, William Jennings Bryan and ex-President Grover Cleveland in march at the Texas Democratic State Convention, only to be hit hard by the Texas Convention cannonball.
