Summary

'The Entrance to Scapa Flow'
Three studies on a single sheet, signed by the artist, lower right, this was reproduced with the title given above in his co-authored book 'More Sea Fights of the Great Wars', f. p.74. The top drawing is inscribed by him to identify the 'Calf of Flotta and Hoxa Gate' on the left and the '5th Battle Squadron' on the right, comprising 'Queen Elizabeth'-class battleships, with the 'Barham' leading the 'Valiant'. Their rig indicates a date of 1916-17. In the middle is a small island coast study from seaward labelled 'Switha'. The bottom drawing is inscribed '1st Battle Squadron off Barth Head' with three battleships of the R-class leading. The ship at the end of the line beyond the turn and pointing in the opposite direction is the 'Canada'. Again the rig indicates a date of 1916-17.
