The place selected was Grado itself and everyweek there was a mee-ting of this primitivecouncil, so very impor-tant for the life amongthe lagoons, and hereresided the tribune whoacted as chief of theassemblies. This honour fellto Grado owing to thedignity of its origin,for, as a daughter ofAquileia the renowned,she united in herself themost striking remem-brances of the motherwith the ceremonialgreatness of the ancientand wealthy Basilica. It was there con-sequently in preferenceto other sites that theancient shrines conse-crated by the piety ofa few were replaced bythose churches so mag-nificent with marble, with metalwork and with sculpture, where thetownsmen lavished veritable treasures to make them worthy of their de-dication and on a par with their own acquired wealth and splendour.
