The arrest of Christ: the kiss of Judas; the ear of Malchus cut off by St. Peter
Summary
According to the account in the Gospel of Matthew, Judas agreed to betray Jesus to the religious authorities in exchange for thirty pieces of silver. At the Last Supper, Jesus identified Judas as his betrayer, and after the meal, Judas went to the authorities and kissed Jesus, allowing them to identify and arrest him.
Willem Vrelant (c. 1430 - 1481) was a Flemish manuscript illuminator and painter who worked in Bruges during the late Middle Ages. He was known for his intricate and detailed illustrations, often with ornate borders, vibrant colours and gold leaf accents. Vrelant was a prolific artist and his works are in many important collections around the world, including the British Library, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France and the Getty Museum. He was also highly regarded by his contemporaries and was appointed official illuminator to the court of Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in 1465. Vrelant's style was a major influence on later Flemish artists, including Gerard David and Hans Memling.
