SAN DIEGO (Aug. 07, 2008) The aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) prepares to moor at Naval Air Station North Island to conduct a transfer of personnel and equipment with the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73). The 46- year-old carrier is the oldest active-duty warship in the Navy and will be replaced this summer by George Washington as the Navy's only permanently forward-deployed aircraft carrier. The first aircraft carrier commissioned into the United States Navy was USS Langley (CV-1) on 20 March 1922.
