Teutonic RMG PW2013, William Lionel Wyllie

description

Summary

Teutonic
Medium includes graphite. This presumably shows the ship iced up on the north Atlantic run after she came into service in 1889 and presumably rendering assistance to the American schooner in the foregraound fling the stars and stripes upside-down as a mark of distress. It may be an illustration for a periodical such as the 'Graphic' or 'Illustrated London News' but the incident remains to be identified.

William Lionel Wyllie (1851–1931) also known as W. L. Wyllie was a prolific English painter of maritime themes in both oils and watercolours. He has been described as "the most distinguished marine artist of his day." His work is in the Tate, the Royal Academy, the Imperial War Museum, the National Maritime Museum, the National Museum of the Royal Navy, and many other institutions around the world.
