Scope and content: This file unit consists of correspondence related to Tarpaulin Cove Light received by Benjamin Lincoln, Henry Dearborn, and Henry A. S. Dearborn in their capacity as Superintendents of Massachusetts Lighthouses. Included are proposals to build the lighthouse, recommendations for lighthouse keepers, and correspondence related to repairs and expenses. Additional correspondence documents landowner James Bowdoin III’s opposition to building the lighthouse, which would eventually delay construction for over ten years. Correspondents include Treasury Secretary Albert Gallatin, James Bowdoin III and his agent Thomas Winthrop, contractor and lamp maker Winslow Lewis, and Lighthouse Keeper John Geyer.
